Watson institute for international and public affairs at brown university
In 2012, at the request of Richard Locke, then director of the Watson Institute, I convened a committee called Art at Watson. Composed of staff, faculty, students, and community members, the committee was charged with enlivening the institute by “putting art on the walls.”
Since 2013, Art at Watson has worked to integrate art into the fabric of the research and teaching done at the Institute. It has hosted more than 40 exhibitions, panel discussions, film screenings, and more.

Art at Watson has presented documentary films, digital works, fine art photography, photojournalism, comics, and dance to explore topics such as climate justice, economic inequalities, warfare, crossing borders, and displacements. Artists and works have come from or addressed issues in Amazonia, the Arab world, the Arctic, Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, Chile, China, Cuba, India, Kurdistan, Mexico, Mesopotamia, Myanmar, Spain, Syria, and Wales.
“There’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless.’ There are only the deliberately silenced, or the preferably unheard.”
